Patti Smith
Patti Smith is a poet and rock singer who first gained notice when reading her poetry at gatherings in New York City in the early '70s.By 1974Smith had edged toward music by reading with the backup of electric guitarist and rock critic Lenny Kaye, notably on her independent-label single,"Piss Factory."By 1975Smith had organized a band that was playing in such clubs as the punk birthplace in New York,CBGB's,and she earned a contract with Arista Records. This resulted in the release of Horses,a critically acclaimed album that featured her songs, sometimes melded to dramatic readings, and such rock oldies as "Land of 1,000Dances."Radio Ethiopia was both mainstream-rock-oriented and more experimental, depending on which track you played. With 1978's Easter,Smith was definitely moving in a more commercial direction, especially by pairing with Bruce Springsteen for the hit single "Because the Night."That marked the high point of Smith's rock career.Wave (1979)found her waving goodbye;she married ex-MC5guitarist Fred "Sonic"Smith and retired from the music business. Her return came with the promising 1988album Dream of Life, but she was not back to full-time duty.Smith's husband died suddenly at the end of 1994.In 1995,she began making concert appearances again while preparing a new album due in 1996.In June 1996,Smith released Gone Again;Peace and Noise appeared a year later, and in the spring of 2000she returned with Gung Ho.
